Milton Lake

Milton Lake is a 45 minute drive north of the town of Truckee; up state route # 89 and then west on Hennnes Pass Road. It is located at 5900’ on the west-slope of the Sierra. Just being at this pretty and mesmerizing lake is enough to recharge your thinking. For that matter, the drive alone, with its vistas of the Sierra’s Mount Lola, meadows, and meandering streams, makes your time well spent. The fly fishing is the bonus.

Some “regulars” consider Milton the region’s most “technical” test of a stillwater fly angler’s ability There are times when its wild rainbows and browns can be very selective. When the trout are up and feeding it can be very challenging…but, gratifying when you put it all together. When the trout are not feeding on top; indicator-nymphing and use of streamers are the productive methods.

The Middle Fork of the Yuba River flows for about a mile below Jackson Meadows Reservoir and empties into Milton. This resulting small, 13 acre, tail-water impoundment is perfectly suited for inflatables, canoes and prams. Wild Browns and a sprinkling of Rainbow trout are present. to There is very limited shoreline casting room.

The regulations, which apply to both Milton and the Middle Fork of the Yuba, is two trout under 12” and barbless artificial only, no bait.
