North Fork of the Yuba River

The NORTH FORK of the YUBA flows down the Sierra’s west-slope from Yuba Pass (6701’). The river flows alongside state route 49, the Gold Highway. This stream is a good mid-summer option. There are two reasons for venturing north of Truckee during the heat of a Tahoe summer; solitude and cool water. Because of the many mountain springs spilling into the river, the waters are cooler on the North Fork than other nearby moving waters.

The fun at this “quick-action” mountain stream is casting attractor dry flies. Although the size of its rainbow trout is small; mostly being in the 6”-10” range, it is off-set by numbers. Most of the trout in this tumbling, boulder-strewn river are in the riffles and pocket-water. Larger ones are in the deep, crystalline pools; fed by white-water inflows at the pool’s head. Rainbows predominate, brookies are more prevalent immediately below Yuba Pass and there is an occasional brown in the mix.
